One postcode, two housing stories
Berwick is really two suburbs sharing a name and a postcode. There are the older streets around the Village on High Street, where quarter-acre and larger blocks were built on decades ago and the gardens have had forty years to establish. Then there are the estates that filled in south of the freeway from the nineties onwards, two storey, close together, newer and tighter.
Harkaway, up the hill and also 3806, is different again: acreage, long unsealed driveways, no street lighting and no bus. Which of the three you are in changes what care looks like more than any brochure allows for, so tell us the street when you ring rather than the suburb.
The garden that has got away from someone
The single most common Berwick conversation we have is about the garden. Somebody planted it in 1979, spent every weekend since on it, and can no longer prune, mow or get up a ladder to the gutters. Losing that upsets people considerably more than losing the vacuuming does, and it is often the first visible sign that the house has become too much.

Coming home from Casey Hospital
Casey Hospital sits on Kangan Drive, minutes from most Berwick addresses, and it is the reason a good share of our enquiries from 3806 begin on a ward. Ring while the person is still in, not after they are home. It is a small thing that changes the whole first fortnight.
In-home nursing takes the wound care and the medication changes from day one. Allied health continues the physiotherapy and gets an occupational therapist into the house, which in a two-storey estate home usually turns into a conversation about whether the bedroom can move downstairs before anyone spends money on modifications.
The rest of the week
Personal care covers the mornings. Transport covers appointments and the shopping, whether that is Eden Rise, the Village shops on High Street or back to Casey for a follow-up. Where a spouse has quietly become a full-time carer, which happens constantly in this suburb and is almost never named, respite is the service that keeps that arrangement from collapsing.
Berwick's other advantage is that there is somewhere worth going. Wilson Botanic Park, on the old quarry site, is a walk that suits someone slowing down, and a companion who drives makes the difference between going and not.
Living up the hill
Harkaway deserves a paragraph of its own. Acreage, long gravel drives, gates, no street lighting and no bus makes it a lovely place to live and a difficult place to age. A carer arriving at four on a July afternoon needs to know about the gate and the drive before they set out, not while they are sitting in it.
Tell us the access details when you ring and we will build them into the booking. The same applies to anyone on the larger blocks off the Beaconsfield side: the distance from the letterbox to the front door is a real factor when somebody is on a frame, and it is worth an occupational therapist looking at the path as well as the bathroom.

Dad is being discharged from Casey Hospital. How soon can care start?
Ring us before the discharge rather than after it. Casey Hospital on Kangan Drive is a short drive from most Berwick addresses, and with a few days' notice we can usually have nursing and personal care in place for the first day home, which is when the risk is highest.
Can you get to Harkaway? The driveway is long and unsealed.
Harkaway shares the 3806 postcode with Berwick and we do work up there, but tell us about the access when you ring. A long gravel drive, no street lighting and a gate matter for scheduling and for the winter afternoon visits, and it is better dealt with before the first booking than during it.
Do you cover Beaconsfield, Narre Warren and Officer?
Yes. Narre Warren and Narre Warren South are 3805, Beaconsfield is 3807, Officer is 3809 and Clyde North is 3978. All of them are inside the same south-eastern run as Berwick.
Can someone prune and mow as well as clean inside the house?

An occupational therapist looks at the whole house before recommending anything. The answer is frequently to move the bedroom to the ground floor and make the downstairs toilet workable, rather than to attempt a stair lift. Rails, a shower seat and better lighting handle most of the rest.
