Werribee Mercy Hospital on the Princes Highway is the public hospital for most of Wyndham, and it carries aged and palliative care alongside a twenty-four-hour emergency department. That means a lot of the calls we take from 3030 start on a ward, not in a lounge room.

The advice we give every time is the same and almost nobody takes it early enough: ring before the discharge date. If we know a few days out, in-home nursing can pick up the dressings and the new medication list from day one, and allied health can keep the physiotherapy going instead of letting a fortnight of ward progress quietly unwind on the couch.

Everything here is a drive

Werribee is not a walkable suburb once you are past a certain age. The old township around Watton Street is compact enough, but the estates that have spread north and west of it are not, and the shopping has largely migrated to Pacific Werribee over the boundary in Hoppers Crossing. The train terminates at Werribee station, which is useful if you are going to the city and useless if you are going to a specialist in Point Cook.

When the licence goes, the effect in Wyndham is immediate and larger than people expect. Transport is our most-booked service here for exactly that reason: appointments, the shopping, the hairdresser, the cemetery on a Sunday. Door to door, waited with, bags carried in.

An old township with new suburbs bolted on

Werribee has two kinds of housing and they need different things from us. The older streets near the township and out toward Werribee South are post-war and mid-century: single storey, decent blocks, gardens that someone has kept for forty years and can no longer manage. The estates north and west of them are newer, tighter and often double storey, with the main bathroom upstairs and a hob shower to step over.

For the first group, general home maintenance is what keeps the place liveable: mowing, edges, gutters, the jobs that stop being safe once a ladder is involved. For the second, the conversation is usually about whether a downstairs room can become the bedroom, and an occupational therapist works that out before anyone commits money to home modifications.

The services people actually start with

Personal care generally comes first, usually because showering has become the flashpoint of the whole week. Meals and nutrition follows more often here than elsewhere, because Wyndham households are frequently multigenerational and the older person is eating alone at four in the afternoon while everybody else is still at work.

Where several things are running at once, and particularly where the family is coordinating from another suburb, care management is the piece that stops appointments and referrals falling between people. It is not glamorous. It is the difference between a plan and a pile of paperwork.

One postcode, two very different places

3030 covers both Werribee and Point Cook, which are about ten kilometres and twenty years of development apart. Wyndham Vale and Manor Lakes are 3024, Tarneit and Truganina are 3029, Hoppers Crossing is 3029 as well. We work across all of it, but tell us your street rather than just your postcode, because the scheduling maths is genuinely different depending on which side of the river you are on.
