The language is most of the service
Cabramatta's older Vietnamese residents largely arrived as refugees in the late seventies and eighties. They learned enough English to raise families, run shops and deal with Centrelink, and they are now at the age where that second language starts handing itself back.
Dementia makes it obvious. A person loses their most recently acquired language first and returns to the one they grew up in, sometimes over a few months. A man who managed fine in English at seventy-five can be answering only in Vietnamese at eighty-two. A carer who can't follow him isn't delivering personal care at that point, she's guessing, and he knows she's guessing, which is its own kind of indignity.

When three generations share a house
Living with adult children is normal in Cabramatta rather than a last resort, and it changes what families actually need. The showering, the toileting, the cooking and the medication reminders are usually already being done, most often by one daughter or daughter-in-law who also has a job and her own children.
Respite in that situation rarely means a residential stay. It means someone capable in the house on a Tuesday and a Thursday so the family carer can get to her own doctor, sleep, or go to work without her phone face-up on the desk. Personal care has a second obstacle here, which is the feeling that handing over the showering is an admission the family has failed. It isn't, and a carer who understands that walks into the first shift differently.
What gets eaten
Weight loss is one of the earliest signs that someone is not managing, and in Cabramatta it's often a food problem before it's a medical one. An eighty-five-year-old who has stopped eating won't be talked round by a sandwich and a hot roast. She'll eat congee. Meals and nutrition here means a carer who can cook rice properly and buy the right greens and herbs from the John Street shops, not a supermarket run and a microwave.

Support at Home replaced Home Care Packages on 1 November 2025, and we can start privately while an assessment is still pending.
